Annotative Assembly 02
Annotative Assembly 02 is an installation developed during a one-day workshop led by Cait McCarthy and Jordan Young. The workshop was part of the Day of Design at Auburn University, an annual event featuring guest speakers and workshops from industry leaders and practitioners in architecture and industrial design.
As the second iteration in a three-part series, the workshop explored participatory construction by engaging students as collaborators in the construction process. Using a custom marking robot, Scribe 2.0, fabrication and assembly information for the installation was directly embedded onto timber members. Annotations included cut angles, drill points, alignments, and unique part numbers. Each piece functioned as both a drawing and an assembly guide, reducing the need for complex construction documents, minimizing errors, and enabling people of all skill levels to participate in the building process. In this iteration, students used an app to view the digital model as they assembled the installation.
